Marine Botany: Citation Style

Citing Sources Accurately

Journal of Phycology

Consult the Journal of Phycology Author Guidelines for structuring your papers.

Citations for this course must be in the style prescribed by the Journal of Phycology. This was recently changed to APA 7th Edition citation style. It is important that you follow this style for formatting of citations.

APA style uses full journal names. But if you need to decipher an abbreviated journal title, there are two tools that help with that:

Note that if you look at previous articles in Journal of Phycology, you will find that those from before 2023 are in a different style. The journal only recently switched to APA 7th Edition style.

To give credit to the author or authors whose research you are using, you must use parenthetical citations. Citation of an author's work in the text documents your work, briefly identifies the source for the reader, and enables the reader to locate the source of information in the alphabetical reference list at the end of the paper. You should also cite paraphrased findings, techniques, or effects discovered, founded by, or associated with a particular author.

The essential elements of in-text citation include:

  • the author’s last name or the document’s title, if no author is identified
  • the date of publication

Remember: When you directly quote a source, you must also include the page number (or paragraph in non-paginated material)

Direct Quotes

According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA Style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199). OR
She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA Style" (Jones, 1998, p.199), but she did not offer an explanation as to why.

Indirect Quotes

In the case of indirect sources, name the original source in your signal phrase, and the secondary source in your in-text citation and reference citations.

Johnson argued that...(as cited in Smith, 2003, p. 102).

Long Quotes

Display quotations of more than 40 words in a double-spaced block of typewritten lines with no quotations marks. Indent five spaces from the left margin, and type the entire quotation on the new margin without the usual opening paragraph indentation. If the quotation is more than one paragraph, indent the first line of the second paragraph and additional paragraphs five spaces from the new margin.

Citation Tools

Online citation tools are designed to help you with the process of formatting citations correctly. Many academic databases will support exporting citations in the APA 7th edition citation format.Laptop

Some free online citation tools like BibMe do offer quick citation generation in the APA 7th Edition style, but their ability to be accurate is dependent upon the quality of information you enter and the correct interpretation for output.

Free citation management software such as Mendeley or Zotero can be invaluable tools in the process of gathering, organizing, and using citations.

Warning roadsign

All citation generation tools may introduce errors, often based upon the information submitted. It is ultimately up to you to look your citations over for accuracy and to correct them to the citation style standard.
