Anatomy of an APA Article Citation

1. Authors: Listed in order as they appear in the article, using surname followed by initials. A maximum of 20 authors are listed. If the article has more than twenty authors, the first 19 and the last author are listed with ellipses before the last author.
    
2. Date: The year of publication in parentheses.
    
3. Article Title: The title of the article, with the first word and proper nouns capitalized.
    
4. Journal Title: Written in full (no abbreviations), capitalized, and in italics.
    
5. Journal Volume, Issue, and Page Numbers: Use varies by journal and style of pagination (page numbering). See Purdue OWL APA guide for examples. Some online journals have no page numbering and a few have no volumes and issues.
    
6. Digital Object Identifier (DOI) or URL: A DOI is preferred as it is a persistent (reliable) link to the article, whereas the URL may be changed. A URL is a link to the specific article and should be preceded by the phrase "Retrieved [Month, day, year]." For example (from above):

DOI as a URL:  https://doi.org/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00025
