Here are the guidelines that govern Laptop checkout and use at the College of Charleston.
Laptops are available for checkout and use by College of Charleston students only with a valid Cougar Card.
Only one laptop can be checkout by an individual at a time and may be taken out of the library.
Laptops are checked out at the Circulation desk, power adapters and other accessories are checked out separately at the same location.
The library Circulation department has 20 laptops and accessories it will loan to individuals for 6 hours or if checked out less than 6 hours before closing, the laptop can be kept overnight and returned 1 hour after opening the next morning. We also have 10 laptops that are available for 3 day checkout. In an effort to support education through the access to technology, the library also reserves the right to offer limited checkout privileges to non-CofC students participating in CofC special programs for example, Upward Bound.
By checking out the laptop and accessories, the individual acknowledges that he/she will be responsible for any theft of or damage to the device and accessories while checked out to that individual. Individuals should report any theft, loss or damage to the Circulation department immediately.
All files or data created on the laptop needs to be preserved in a storage medium, USB drive, cloud, etc., before shutting down and returning the device.
Please remove all personal data from the laptop prior to returning it to the Circulation department. All Personal data will be removed and the original default library image restored within 24 hours of its return to the library.
The MacBook Air has special software on the computer that removes unwanted files and spyware and keeps the laptop operating for all students. Every time the computer is shut down or restarted, it will delete anything the user has on the computer. It is important to know this and that you should not restart the computer if you are working on a project until you have saved it to a USB drive, Google drive or storage other than the laptop hard drive.
Laptops must be returned to a staff member at the Circulation desk during their hours of operation. Laptops may not be left on the counter or placed in the book drop as the individual will be charged for any/all damage to the laptop and its accessories until it is checked in at Circulation. Laptop location services and tracking software is loaded on the laptop. Laptops that are severely overdue or feared lost or stolen may be subject to remote locking and wiping to prevent information theft or to assist with recovery.
Library Circulation department will check laptops and accessories upon return and any/all fees will be assessed.

Circulation staff can only provide limited laptop support, information desk staff will provide first tier support and more extensive assistance will be referred to Student Computing Support room 101 if needed.
