Streaming Media & Media Resources at the Addlestone Library: Inserting Videos in OAKS

Embedding Any Streaming Database Video Online into OAKS

This is how to embed streaming videos from Academic Video Online, Films on Demand, and Kanopy into an OAKS class. 

 

  1. Locate your media file from the database (Academic Video Online, Films on Demand or Kanopy). Then copy the embed code that is available on the page

  2. Next, navigate to your course in OAKS.

  3. From within the Content tool, click on the New button and click Create a File.

  4. Type a topic Title.

  5. In the HTML editor box, click the Insert Stuff icon. It is in the upper left of the box.  You will get a dropdown menu.

  6. Choose Enter an Embed Code. Paste the code into the Embed Code box.

  7. Click Next.  A frame of the video will appear.

  8. Click Insert

  9. Finally Click Publish.

    Your playable, framed video is now fully embedded into your OAKS page.

Embedding Films on Demand Into OAKS from within OAKS

In Films on Demand, unlike any of the other streaming video databases, one can embed streaming videos from within the OAKS class. 

  1. Navigate to your course in OAKS.

  2. From within the Content tool, click on the New button and click Create a File.

  3. Type a topic Title.

  4. Click on the “Insert Stuff” button (in the upper left of the content box) and you get a drop-down menu.

  5. The last item on the list is “Films on Demand.  Click on this icon. This will open up a search box, which will allow you to search the Films on Demand database for your title. If you know the title, put it in the search box surrounded by quote marks.

  6. Click on the "Embed" button of the title that you wish to embed.  You may have to click the "Allow" button or otherwise your video will be blocked by the security feature.. This will embed the video and you should see a preview image of your video.

  7. Now click the "Insert" button at the bottom left of the box.

  8. Finally you must click the "Publish" button at bottom left of the screen.

SHIELD WARNING NOTE:   Currently the browsers Firefox and Chrome block embed codes generated from our databases. You can disable the blocking by clicking the shield icon to the side of the URL box in the browser (on the left in Firefox and on the right in Chrome). 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How to find an Embed code in a streaming database

Academic Video Online (VAST)

1.      Click on Embed/Link under the video screen. 

2.     A pop up window with the embed code will appear. 

3.     Copy this embed code.

4.     Paste this code into your OAKS course Embed Code box.

Films on Demand

1.      Click on Embed under the video screen.

2.      A pop up window with the embed code will appear.  

3.      Copy this embed code.

4.      Paste this code into your OAKS course Embed Code box.

 Kanopy

1.      Click on Embed under the video screen.

2.      The embed code will appear in a box just below the Embed button.  

3.      Copy this embed code.

4.      Paste this code into your OAKS course Embed Code box.

 

Inserting a video link in OAKS using the permalink

When inserting a link to streaming media in OAKS, it is necessary to use the permalink generated by that media.  This is the permanent, static hyperlink to that media. This is also know as a persistant link.  These permalinks can be found in the same area as the media embed code within the media record.

Do not use the hyperlink shown in the top of the browser.  This link is temporarily generated in the browser.
